Web 2.0 Service
Test Average: 60%
Updated 24 August 2009

Description

Links to popular sites with mouse over showing contents and sometimes an image so you do not have to go to the site unless you want to read further. It is possible to mark a story which will then be aggregated on a personal popurls page. This is a useful way to collect cites in categories and it is possible to change the way they are presented.

Accessibility Testing Results

Although this appears like a simple string of webpages sadly with a lack of labelling and accurate links it makes parts of the service of limited use for the screen reader user. It is keyboard navigable and the text size and contrast levels can be changed via the browser but with some buttons are not very clear although small text explanations are available and these zoom well with the rest of the site.

# Test Score Summary
1Login, Signup and Other Forms Accessible Poor The registration depends on which Open ID you have already, such as Google. The form provided is not labelled and may cause problems for screen reader users.
2Image ALT Attributes Poor No images on this site offer alternative text - this may cause screenreader users to have a differing understanding of the content.
3Link Target Definitions Poor Many buttons, especially on forms, are images and do not have titles. This prevents screenreader users from even knowing what the buttons do. Some link titles such as "comments" are repeated many times.
4Frame Titles and Layout Excellent No frames or iframes, which can be disorientating for screen-readers, are used in the design.
5Removal of Stylesheet Excellent The page is still understandable and functional when it is viewed as a linear document, with no styles.
6Audio/Video Features Fair This site does not deal with multimedia itself, but provides image links to multimedia on other sites. These contain a text title.
7Video/animations - audio descriptions Fair It is possible to add text to describe items but there is no chance to add audio descriptions
8Appropriate use of Tables Good Tables are not used for the design of this website. Some tables are used, which don't contain headings.
9Tab Orderings Correct and Logical Good The tab order is mostly logical, although on some browsers the outline showing where tab focus currently is cannot be seen.
10Page Functionality with Keyboard Excellent The website is fully accessible without the use of a mouse but there are so many links that using a keyboard to reach them all would not be practical.
11Accessibility of Text Editors Excellent There is no rich text editor on this site.
12Appropriate Feedback with Forms Good This site uses OpenID authentication, which is not handled by Popurls. The user may wonder why they are sent to a completely different site.
13Contrast and Colour Check Excellent No contrast issues with black background and white or blue text. It is possible to change this to white on black with browser options. Some grey text is not so clear.
14Page Integrity when Zooming Excellent The website maintains the layout and usability of all critical areas perfectly when zoomed.
15Text size, style, blinking elements and Readability Fair Particularly small text prevalent throughout the site, which may be difficult to view without zooming the page. Sans-serif fonts used, and there is no flashing or blinking content.
