Description

Parenting is an online website which provides important information for mums and mums-to-be, about their lives, and also about the essential treatment of their children during the early years and parenting during their school years.

Accessibility Testing Results

This website failed all the accessibility checks due lack of labels, image tags, tables and poor layout and text sizing in some places. Contrast levels of some headings were poor. If you use a screen reader the best option is to download WebbIE as it can make access easier but media and Flash items will still cause problems.

# Test Score Summary
1Login, Signup and Other Forms Accessible Poor This site is missing labels for the signup form so it is more difficult for screen reader users but it can be used in a text browser such as Webbie. The fact that there are tables does not help either.
2Image ALT Attributes Poor This site is missing alternative text for all the images and advertisements so screen reader uses miss much of the additional features.
3Link Target Definitions Fair Some links are not very descriptive and some are confusing such as one that is just a long line of numbers e.g Link 3: 555946714145744c62726f41425a494e.
4Frame Titles and Layout Poor There are frames and iframe but with missing names.
5Removal of Stylesheet Poor The site without stylesheet changes the settings.
6Audio/Video Features Poor This site does not have an option to add descriptions for videos or animations.
7Video/animations - audio descriptions Poor This site does not have an option to add descriptions for videos or animations
8Appropriate use of Tables Poor The site uses tables in its design, which cause navigation and order issues when used by screen reader users.
9Tab Orderings Correct and Logical Fair The site is accessible by tab order (top-to-bottom or left-to-right format). However, Flash elements cannot be reached with keyboard only access.
10Page Functionality with Keyboard Poor This website requires the use of a mouse in order to reach media players and Flash elements. It would be hard to make assistive technologies work with some of the advertisements.
11Accessibility of Text Editors Poor The user cannot use the menu controls on the rich text editors unless they are able to use a mouse or perhaps mouse keys. The editor is not easy for screen reader users
12Appropriate Feedback with Forms Fair The feedback in the page appears ahead of the forms to be filled in which may cause problems for those with short term memory difficulties and certainly does not help screen reader users. It is appropriate so this one is hard to mark.
13Contrast and Colour Check Good It is difficult to read some links and headings that are in pale purple or light coloured on pale backgrounds. However, the main text is good and most pages have clear content sections
14Page Integrity when Zooming Good The pages zoomed relatively well but at the higher end some overlapping occurred in some browsers.
15Text size, style, blinking elements and Readability Good There are no blinking elements and it uses a variety of Sans serif fonts - most above font size 10 but the forums have very small text.
