Accessibility Testing Results

This web site is easy to use and keyboard navigation is on the whole acceptable although some areas appear to follow an illogical route. Forms are not well labelled in some cases but for readers it is simple to search and find books. Javascript links do not have to be used, as most books have simple links, although some are repetitive.

# Test Score Summary
Login, Signup and Other Forms Accessible Fair Even though it is possible to move within the page using tab key, links are not highlighted and navigation is not always logical. A CAPTCHA is not used at all. There are many missing labels, which affect screen reader users. NVDA does not read the content to enable the form to be filled.
Image ALT Attributes Good Images are used for book covers and most have alt tags but the links are in javascript and these are read as blank links which is confusing for a screen reader. However, all the main images are clearly described and these could be read by NVDA screen reader.
Link Target Definitions Fair Some links are clearly described, but there are many which are not easy to understand when heard in isolation, so they are not accessible using a screen reader. Many are repeated as part of the database system so there are ones such as "learn more..."
Frame Titles and Layout Good This website uses an iframe, the frame is not titled but does not appear to impact on accessibility.
Removal of Stylesheet Excellent The page is well organized without the CSS, menus are understandable when they are linearly viewed.
Audio/Video Features Excellent This website does not have any audio or video features, as it is about books and is made up of text and images.
Video/animations - audio descriptions Excellent There are no videos or animations on the website.
Appropriate use of Tables Excellent Tables are not used to construct pages and headers are used when necessary in data tables.
Tab Orderings Correct and Logical Good Even though tab key moves between links the links are not highlighted or surrounded by a clear line. Tab order is generally good but fails in some cases and appears to go to central content and then return to other items on the top - in particular on the registration page.
Page Functionality with Keyboard Excellent It is easy to navigate through this web site without mouse as all the features are accessible.
Accessibility of Text Editors Excellent Text editing is fully accessible, as a screen reader can read the posted comments and tab key can reach the edit form which has no other editing tools.
Appropriate Feedback with Forms Excellent Clear and appropriate feedback with no time limits, also a screen reader user can reach the feedback comment as it is displayed in the same window.
Contrast and Colour Check Good Colour contrast is acceptable - black text is used with white background. Although there is some use of very small light grey text which may be unclear. Generally the contrast levels passed the contrast check validation.
Page Integrity when Zooming Excellent The design of the website is not affected by zooming, and it is clear and well organised.
Text size, style, blinking elements and Readability Excellent Generally font size is 10pt for the main content and style is very clear and it is compatible with the page layout. There was no flashing or blinking content. The very small text zooms well.
